New Zealand Parent Resident Visa: Hybrid Selection Started October 5

Corrected and updated 18 October 2026. The earlier version mischaracterised the Parent Resident Visa selection overhaul as new sponsor-income and community-integration requirements. This correction explains the confirmed EOI selection changes and retains the original publication date and URL.

A single pool with queue and ballot selection

Immigration New Zealand announced the selection changes on August 8, 2026. The hybrid process started on October 5, 2026: valid Parent Resident Visa expressions of interest (EOIs) moved into one pool. Around 90% of selections use a date-ordered queue and around 10% use a random ballot. The annual limit of 2,500 visa approvals in principle remains unchanged.

The first hybrid selection is scheduled for November 10, 2026. This is an upcoming selection date, not a promise of an invitation, a processing deadline or a visa grant. INZ expects four selections a year, with queue selections followed by the ballot on each selection date.

Existing EOIs and continued interest

Valid EOIs already in the pool on October 5 transferred automatically; holders do not need to submit another EOI for that transfer. INZ says queue positions are being finalised and eligible holders will be contacted directly. Keep contact details current and check email, including spam folders.

EOIs no longer automatically expire after two years if the holder confirms continued interest within six months of each two-year anniversary of submitting the current EOI. Missing that confirmation deadline causes expiry and removal. Separate transitional provisions can affect queue dates for previously expired EOIs; check INZ's detailed guidance for those conditions.

Selection is not visa approval

The visa application process remains unchanged. Selection may lead to an invitation for people who appear eligible. Applicants and sponsors must still meet the applicable visa requirements. This selection update does not establish a universal new sponsor-income figure or a new requirement to provide evidence of community activities.
